Welcome to The Scribble Game!
This is an interactive art challenge that invites the player to be creative, just for fun!
Weekly prompts on this site are a little different from what you might have seen — instead of words or sayings, The Scribble Game simply gives you a line. A scribble, if you will!
The goal is to turn that scribble into a drawing of your own. It could be a simple doodle. A whole comic. The Mona Lisa. Up to you!
The point of The Scribble Game is not to teach you how to draw, but how to think like an artist. How to take an ordinary shape, line, or dot and turn it into something unexpected.
Avid scribblers look at a coffee stain and see an amazing skull with meteor eyes. Math problems become whale sharks, lampshades become tenanted apartments, clouds become colossal moose.
One scribble. Infinite possibilities.
What will you see?
Rules & FAQ
The Scribble Game is pretty lax as rules go, but it’s always good to clear things up in writing! If you have a more specific question I missed, feel free to email me with any questions, comments, concerns, questionable life choices and/or epiphanies!
-
Of course! The Scribble Game is primarily about seeing the possibility in something abstract, and if a reference would help you draw that possibility more confidently, then go for it!
-
Simple! If you prefer to work analog, you can take a screenshot of the scribble prompt and print it out. If you would rather work digitally, just take a screenshot and paste it into whatever drawing app you like!
-
Easy Peasy! If you don’t have a printer or a way to perfectly copy/paste the scribble, just try your best to duplicate it in your sketchbook (or a piece of scratch paper!) Just make sure you draw your scribble out BEFORE you do your drawing!
-
So glad you asked! You can 100% show off your scribbles. If you post them on social media, just use the hashtag #TheScribbleGame . But if you want to be awesome, you could also send your work to me at vadedullaghan@gmail.com, and I just might post your work on this very site, to inspire future scribblers!
-
Whatever you’ve got! You can use as many or as little materials as you want, from paint on a canvas to a ballpoint pen on a legal pad. There’s really no preferred tools. Personally, I swap favorite materials all the time, so don’t feel a need to stay consistent with your styles or tools here. This is a place to be experimental with your creativity!
-
None of it! The Scribble Game is completely free, because everyone should have access to art. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a whole studio and expensive supplies, or if you’ve got chalk and a sidewalk. Art knows no bounds!
-
NO! No matter what skill or experience level you have in art, The Scribble Game is for everybody. All styles, techniques, and ideas are welcome! This challenge can be whatever you make of it, be it a stepping stone into creativity or an fun exercise to escape art block.
-
I can’t tell you that! That defeats the whole point! It’s up to you to decide what you see in a scribble. That said, I will be disappointed if you just put a square around it and call it a box of shoelaces. But you know what, sometimes art block be crazy.
If you’d like to send your work to me for a chance to be featured on this site, this is the place!
