BIG NEWS!

I have a huge announcement! My latest project has finally reached the launch stage, which means I can now share it with the world! This is the most involved project I have ever taken on, I think, and I am so excited to announce it!

You may have noticed a new navigation bar on my website! If you look in the upper right corner, you’ll see a tab entitled “The Scribble Game”. That’s the one! Here’s a little backstory.

The Scribble Game started out as a drawing game I’ve played with my friends and family since I was little. Since then I’ve kept up the habit, even though my loved ones have definitely gotten sick of this game. I’ve come up with countless adaptations, including a solo version, a color blob version, GeoScribbles, you name it! But this is by far the most exciting variant yet!

Without further ado, I’m thrilled to introduce The Scribble Game, online!!! Here’s the run-down:

Each week, I’ll post a brand new prompt, which will act as our creative jumping-off point for the week.

You might have participated in drawing challenges before, like Inktober, #DrawThisInYourStyle, and others. These all work similarly! You get a prompt, you draw your take on it, and either post it to the site or your own social media, or keep it to yourself like a dragon hoards treasure.

The Scribble Game is much like this, but with one key difference. Most drawing challenge sites use words as a prompt. We use scribbles.

The game works like this. I draw a scribble and post it, along with my own take. Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to do your own drawing on the scribble! Simple as that!

You can use whatever materials and supplies you have handy, be it a mechanical pencil and printer paper or Canson sketchbook pages with Winsor-Newton paints.

All skill levels, styles, and ideas are welcome! The only guideline is to be creative.

Each week along with the current scribble, I’ll do a blog post like this one (except much shorter) with my drawing next to the scribble. If you choose to do the challenge, I highly recommend reading said post AFTER you do your own drawing. Keep your mind open and unclouded by outside ideas!

There are more details about the actual gameplay on the Scribble Game Page, but there’s a basic overview!

I’m a very visual person, so if that was a TL;DR for you, I get it! Sometimes it’s easier for me to just look at the pictures on the instructions rather than read the description. If you’re like that too, worry not! Here’s my scribble prompt and drawing for this week:

This week’s scribble!

My drawing!

You may have noticed that the scribble has rotated, which is totally okay! Encouraged, even! Sometimes I have to turn the scribble completely upside down in order to see the hidden picture.

Now, if you were hoping for more drawings to look at when you clicked on this blog post, you’re in luck! I actually did five variations on this scribble, to try to illustrate how just a simple line can have almost infinite iterations and possibilities.

Drawing #2! (same scribble, different angle!)

Drawing #3! Mixed media, this time! It’s 100% ok if you go over the lines of the scribble. I got lucky because my brand of paint was low quality, so you can still see a little of the green scribble under the paint. Just so long as you keep the main idea and follow most of the lines, it’s ok with me!

Drawing #4! Horses are notorious for being difficult to draw, but it’s just a scribble! If it turns out looking a little bit like a hotdog with a snatched waist, as this one did, that’s alright! At least you tried! The scribble game is not a step-by-step how to draw. It’s a space for experimentation! The point is that you see the possibility and inspiration within an abstract, nonsensical line. It’s an avenue for creativity, not for perfect masterpieces and complex illustrations every time. (But props to you if you can do that!) Try something new! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never drawn it before.

Finally, here’s Drawing #5. This is actually what I saw first in the scribble, but I decided to put it on hold to make space for more ideas. Sometimes it’s better to challenge yourself like that! I usually go with the second or third idea I have for the scribble, just to shake things up. (Unless we’re doing a timed challenge, then all bets are off!)

So there you have it! I’m so excited to finally launch this idea. It’s been swimming around my brain for a while, but this year it’s come to fruition at last! I hope you feel as inspired by this project as I do. Have fun, creative people!
